Frak and John John Da Don [DEBATABLE]

Recap: History says John John Da Don should know better. The longtime battle rap vet insinuating before this KOTD bout against Frak, that when it comes to bars ‘jokes’ aren’t as substantive as straight-up lyricism. And while that opinion may have worked at times against his opponent (indeed, based on JJDD’s ‘Jokes vs. lyricism’ stamp beforehand, during the battle Frak would admit to purposely fine-tuning his bars a bit away from usual comedic slants), when you consider that JJDD got his start in the backpack raps and jokes era of Grind Time, one would think that he of all people wouldn’t go there. Nonetheless a dope and highly competitive 3-rounder with plenty of fierce angles, stifling personals, fiendish Jew tropes, witty punches, solid wordplay and righteous darts comes down to (after the two split the first two rounds) to the 3rd round where JJDD unleashed an angle/punch-lit, witty at times, personal-drenched turn that was certainly substantive in its potency. While Frak came with a slightly more versatile round lit with more solid JJDD-isms, some racy political theater, ironic (“We control the King of the Dot, even got a couple of Rosenberg’s hosting too!”) puns and fierce punchlines/personals that altogether proved to be just as meaty as his opponent. Thus, making this one a debatable.

Verdict: TIE

Favorite line: John John Da Don – “You a struggling Jewish rapper, it got to be so few, ‘cuz shining should never be a problem for no jewels!”

Frak defeats A. Ward

Recap: From GTX/Grind Time, a close on until round 3, Frak and A. Ward put on an entartaining show filled to the rim with a bunch of witty puns/personals, fiery schemes, spicy rebuttals, religious barbs, storied angles and formidable punchlines. And while Ward kept it competitive through and through, a slow start to his 3rd to go along with some fire style breakdowsn by Frak, helped the more consistently-lit Bay area vet score a 30 over an opponent who may be taking on too much in a short amount of time.

Verdict: Frak (W) 3-0

Favorite line: Frak – “Aaron turns the other cheek, A. Ward got some fire crosses, A. Ward on the side of violence, Aaron [airing] on the side of caution!”

Geechi Gotti defeats Frak

Recap: Always a dope and unique way to test your pen, compliment battles are also a must-see for their sheer amount of entertainment value. But, hold on. Does Frak, a professional comedian (amongst other gigs) by trade, have an advantage going into one of these compliment battles against a battle rapper who doesn’t do much in the way of comedy when he/she raps? Most likely, yes. But by pulling all the spots, Geechi Gotti made sure that wouldn’t be an issue here. The Compton rapper using plenty of deadpan humor, rich storytelling, a couple of spicy rebuttals and a gang of witty punches/personals to take the latter two rounds (after his opponent edged the 1st) and beat back a pretty solid, Gotti lingo flipping and hilarious at times, but a little too redundant, filler prone and a bit elongated 3 rounds from Frak.

Verdict: Geechi Gotti (W) 2-1

Favorite line: Geecho Gotti – “[sniffs around Frak] I ain’t never smell good credit before!”

Frak defeats Danny Myers

Recap: “Do you believe in a lyrical coincidence?!” LOL. Capped by a hilarious 3rd round that featured a gang of mocking personals and 2 rounds beforehand that were littered with biting schemes, braggadocious punches, witty barbs and ill breakdowns, in this 3-rounder from Rap Off, an angle-lit Frak (who also displayed some dope comedic timing here) beats the breaks off a hard-hitting at times (round 2 was his best), but slip-up prone to the point of choking away his 3rd round Danny Myers (who is clearly battling too much) to score a 30.

Verdict: Frak (W) 3-0

Favorite line: Frak – “It seems like all your friend’s names match their various actions…he had a friend named Carrie, he had to carry his casket!”

Frak defeats Dizaster

Recap: For all the controversy this Frak vs. Dizaster battle from KOTD’s Grand Prix tournament created in the battle community, overall it really that good. The ever-loud and aggressive Diz coming off as lame with his constant disrespectful, touching, tough-guy act while the more carefree Frak’s attempts at humor and politically-righteous darts not only falling short half the time, but often coming off as obnoxious. That said, Frak playing Diz with the 2nd graph was dope and as far as the outcome goes it should’ve still had Frak winning as the Bay area emcee edged the 1st before getting the favor returned in the 2nd. Afterwards, a clearly punch-heavier Frak would take the deciding 3rd for the win.

Verdict: Frak (W) 2-1

Favorite line: Frak – “Bro, you know what rhymes with Dizaster vs. Soul Khan? [yawns], that shit was so long!”

Xcel defeats Frak

Recap: Here versus Xcel on the KOTD stage, the comedic, name-flip potent, storytelling, hometown-friendly and rebuttal-lit stylings of Frak not only make for an insane 2nd round, but more importantly a tie going into the 3rd. But just like he did to take the opening round, Xcel’s on-point lyrical jousting, punch-savvy wordplay, Jewish barbs, wit and sizzling set-ups/personals prove to be enough to take the deciding 3rd round and earn the win.

Verdict: Xcel (W) 2-1

Favorite line: Xcel – “Why come fuck with the hood when white privilege sided with you?, but y’all love adrenaline, so that help me find this clue, this put you close to danger, but not really in it, this is the VICE for you!”
